(CNSNews.com) - The New Jersey Supreme Court is expected to rule today on whether the state constitution permits same-sex marriage. Last year, a state appeals court ruled 2-1 that it is not permitted. Both sides of the debate are watching closely. Lambda Legal, a homosexual advocacy group, appealed the lower court ruling. The group said at the time it always knew the case would end up in the state's highest court. The case dates back to June 2002, when Lambda Legal sued the State of New Jersey on behalf of seven same-sex couples seeking full marriage rights. New Jersey's Domestic Partnership Act gives same-sex couples many, but not all, of the benefits and protections conferred on married people. New Jersey does not have a law barring out-of-state couples from marrying in the state if they would be prohibited from marrying in their home state. According to a report in Wednesday's New York Times, that means "New Jersey could become the nation's gay wedding chapel."
